The ELCOGAS thermoelectric plant, which produced electrical energy with integrated gasification combined cycle technology, ceased its activity in 2016. MAXAM was in charge of the complex demolition of the two concrete towers that was carried out with the detonation of 275 kilograms of explosives in just 3,285 milliseconds.
Before starting the drilling, structural studies were carried out to certify the stability during the operation. In addition, we prepared a communication and safety plan to protect the area, residents and teams involved.
In the second phase, we proceeded to place a total of 466 individual RIODIN charges for the cooling tower and 426 for the gasification tower. The charges were primed with RIOTRONIC DT electronic detonators. Dust control, one of the most difficult parts, was successful owing to the wind forecast and the use of hydrants and sensors. The proximity of other structures, offices and locks required an exhaustive analysis of the potential impact of hydrodynamic shock waves and vibrations with our own RIOBLAST development software.
- WHERE ?
- Puertollano, Spain
- RECIFEMETAL and ELCOGAS
- Safety perimeter
- 1.2 kilometers
- EXPLOSIVE USED
- 275 kilograms of RIODIN dynamite
- +more than 1000 RIOTRONIC DT electronic detonators
- TOTAL SEQUENCE
- 3,285 milliseconds
After the demolition, both towers fell in the planned direction and the seismographs reflected much lower vibration results.
