Cultural and educational initiatives to create a sustainable future

In 1899, MAXAM commissioned Arturo Mélida to illustrate the first “Explosives Calendar” for 1900. Since then, MAXAM has asked a prestigious painter each year to create a work with which to illustrate our well-known calendar. This has enabled us to build up one of the most important collections of paintings in our country by artists such as Emilio Salá, Cecilio Plá, Julio Romero de Torres, Rafael Canogar, Manolo Valdés, Eduardo Arroyo and Alfonso Albacete.

As a result of our historic collaboration with the Asturias Museum of Mining and Industry (MUMI), we inaugurated the Casa del Explosivo (Explosives Museum) in 2003. Casa del Explosivo shows its more than 60,000 annual visitors how the first industrial explosives (dynamite) were developed, their role in mining and in the development of our society.

Alfred Nobel combined like nobody else from his time the roles of entrepreneur, researcher and humanist. At MAXAM, we regard ourselves as the heirs to this innovative and non-conformist spirit which we also promote through our Foundation.
