Looking at the employee market and how the organizations are responding to new challenges I have bad news for you: the future workplace will be fast-moving…To be more concrete: faster than ever.

September 2019

Organizations are facing a big change in the way they manage the relation between employee-employer, due the traditional work approach is broken: new ways of working are arising; talent shortage is now a reality; economic crisis are impacting business decisions; technology disruptions, etc…

What that means for you? In summary: the things you´ve been learning so far will be useless very soon. The new work challenges you will need to address will required the right skills to map yourself properly in this new environment. It´s time to re-learn some skills or just learn them from scratch.

Future of Jobs report 2018. World Economic Forum

Vala Afshar, Huffington Post columnist and active social media writer (@valaAfshar) already mentioned this as it´s been addressed by the 2019 Economic Worldwide Forum (“The 7 Skills the children need to acquire for the future”, WEF).

However I just find out some similarities between the skills children and professionals will need to develop now to be successful in the companies. To put in simple words: you will have to be extremely adaptable and a fast learner.

  • In this way I have as well good news! Here you will find my top 5 suggestions to start your learning journey. Ready? Let´s go…

    1. Try &test your solution as much as you can

Only by stretching your assumptions you will learn other ways to get things done. Become a “doer” and embrace innovation. The build-measure-learn loop that suggest Eric Rice in his “Lean Startup” book, contain the basis to start:

  • 2. Get in contact with different people and love diversity!

Leading by influencing is a must in terms of managing teams; become a “coach” and empower others to develop key skills, do not give advice.

    3. Become a great communicator

If you want to share your ideas with different stakeholders you need to master communication skills. Fortunately, good communication habits come with regular practice, so get the time you need and invest harder. Have a look at Niro Sivanathan Ted conference

  • 4. Fake vs true

In a world of hyper-information, you´ll need to distinguish what is real and what is not. With the rise of social media is easier than ever for some governments and opinion groups to disseminate propaganda and monitor citizen behaviors. Get the time to confront information and not jump into conclusions too early has a name: critical thinking!

    5. Be curious, be creative

Ask yourself as often as you can “what if…?” Only by questioning how we´re doing things we will find out new options, new alternatives. For example: have you ever asked yourself how to peel fruit in the right way?

    So, where to start?

What can you do to build or strength your skills to master your new “YOU”?

Just for the beginning. Try to evaluate yourself about the elements above and identify your quick wins, those you can get the most in a short time. Identify as well people that are good in those specific areas and try to get closer; copy what you think would help you and practice, practice, practice… And remember: only with regular practice and honest feedback you will see some results. Do not try short cuts, not a good idea if you want to have an opportunity to succeed in the future of work. It is not rocket science, is just time and practice.
